Stock Market Updates: Sensex Opens Flat, Nifty Below 17,400; ZEEL Jumps 4%

Sensex Today: Domestic markets opened on a strong note on Tuesday morning amid positive global sentiments.

Sensex Today: Despite opening with modest gains, major benchmark indices displayed a weak trend and closed lower for the eighth straight trading session on Tuesday amid sustained selling in index heavyweights. Market participants were also jittery ahead of the December quarter GDP data to be announced later today.

At the close, the Sensex was down 326.23 points, or 0.55 per cent, at 58,962.12, and smelly It closed at 17,304, down 88.70 points or 0.51 per cent.

After a slow start, the market remained range-bound in the morning, but selling in the afternoon dragged the indices and Nifty touched the day’s low of 17,250.

In February, the Sensex had declined by 1 per cent and the Nifty 50 by 2 per cent.

Cipla, Hindalco Industries, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, ONGC and Tata Steel were the biggest losers on the Nifty. Gainers inspired Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports, Asian Paints, Britannia Industries and Power Grid Corporation.

Among sectors, the Nifty Pharma index declined by 1.3 per cent and the Energy index by one per cent. Metals and information technology closed down 0.8 percent each. However, the Auto and PSU Bank indices gained 0.4 per cent each.

Globally, US markets climbed overnight, with the Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite rising up to 0.6 per cent.

Asia-Pacific markets also advanced with the Nikkei 225, S&P 200, Topix, Kosdaq and Kospi indices rising up to 1 percent each.

In a commodity basket, Brent crude prices declined marginally to $82 per barrel, while WTI crude edged marginally higher to $76 per barrel.
