Stock Market Updates: Sensex flat, Nifty below 18,400; ONGC, Oil India Gain Up to 2%

Sensex Today: Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty opened flat on Tuesday morning amid better global cues. BSE Sensex opened 44 points lower at 62,300 and NSE Nifty 50 was broadly unchanged at 18,394.

Tata Steel, Infosys, Wipro, Nestle gained on the Sensex, while ONGC, Hindalco and Divvy’s Lab Nifty 50 rose up to 1 per cent each.

On the other hand, HDFC twins led the losses on the Sensex, shedding 1 per cent each. Tata Motors, Maruti, M&M were the other frontline losers.

Broader markets outperformed the benchmark. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices rose up to 0.6 per cent against a nearly flat BSE Sensex.

Shares ONGC, Oil India rose up to 2 per cent after the government reduced windfall tax on petroleum crude from Rs 4,100 ($50.13) per tonne to zero. Reading

PVR fell over 2.5 per cent on reporting a consolidated net loss of Rs 333.35 crore for Q4FY23 as against a net loss of Rs 105.49 crore a year ago.

Sectorally, Nifty Pharma, PSB and Realty index were the top gainers, gaining 0.7-1 per cent each, while financials remained weak.

Asian markets were higher this morning with Nikkei, Hang Seng, Kospi up 0.7 per cent. China’s industrial production for April increased by 5.6 percent, compared to a forecast of 10.9 percent growth, while its retail sales increased by 18.4 percent, compared to a forecast of 21 percent growth.

Overnight in the US, the S&P 500 rose 0.3 percent, the Dow 0.14 percent and the Nasdaq 0.66 percent as investors waited for talks on debt ceiling talks in Washington to resume today.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen reaffirmed on Monday that the US could default on its debt as early as June 1.
