Ranchi: After registering a steep rise of 30% in suicides in 2020, Jharkhand has recorded a fall of 14.9% in the suicide cases in 2021, stated the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report.
At the national level, the state has recorded the third highest decline in cases after Lakshwadeep (50%) and Uttarakhand (24%).
According to the report, the number of suicides in 2021 was 1,825 compared to 2,145 in 2020. The rate of suicides, which is calculated per one lakh, was 4.7 in 2021 compared to 5.6 in 2020.
The NCRB figures stated that the suicide cases in 2021 were linked to love affairs (460), marriage-related issues (240), mental illness and insanity (239) and failure in examination (168).
It may be noted here that love affairs (423), marriage-related issues (331), failure in examination (325) and mental illness and insanity were among the important causes of suicides in 2020 also.
Among economic reasons, 217 people had died by suicide in 2020 because of unemployment but the figure declined to 81 in 2021.
The report said 1,233 people (85%) who died by suicide were educated upto Class XII. In comparison, the cases of suicides were low among the unlettered and those with higher education. A similar trend had prevailed in 2020 as well when around 1,150 people (54%) who took the extreme step were educated upto Class XII.
Commenting on the report, senior consultant neuro-psychiatrist Dr Sidharth Sinha said, “Though the percentage of suicides has dropped, in absolute numbers it is not much. “
He added, “The NCRB has categorised suicides under different causes but I feel that mental illness is the all-encompassing factor. Many people are hesitant to come forward for treatment of their mental problems, which aggravates their situation.”
