States and Union Territories have failed to utilize over 20.60 crore COVID vaccines: Health Ministry

New Delhi: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Saturday that 20.60 crore remaining and unutilized COVID-19 vaccine doses are still available with the states and union territories, amid rising cases of COVID-19 in the national capital.

According to the ministry, 192.27 crore (1,92,27,23,625) vaccine doses have been provided to the States/UTs so far through the Government of India (free channel) and the Direct State Procurement category.

It added that more than 20.60 crore (20,60,37,336) remaining and unutilized COVID vaccine doses are still available with the States/UTs, to be administered.

The ministry said that in the new phase of universalisation of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign, the central government will procure (free of cost) 75 per cent of the vaccines produced by vaccine manufacturers in the country and supply to the states and union territories.

On Saturday, 975 new cases of Kovid-19 were reported in the country in the last 24 hours, in which 796 were cured and 4 people died. The number of infections in India has increased to 4,30,40,947, while active cases have increased to 11,366.

According to the data released by the city health department, the national capital recorded 366 cases of Covid-19 on Friday while the positivity rate stood at 3.95 per cent.

While no casualties were reported, the positivity rate of Covid increased from 0.5 per cent to 3.95 per cent in a week.

Reports of infections from several schools in the national capital and surrounding areas had raised concerns weeks after they were opened for offline classes after a two-year halt.
