Released in 2012, English Vinglish marked Sridevi’s comeback to the big screen after 15 years.

Late actress Sridevi’s English Vinglish continues to be one of the most-loved movies to date. Released in 2012, the film revolved around a housewife who is mocked by all for not knowing to speak in English. However, when she decides to learn the language, she discovers herself. Even though the movie was widely moved by all, do you know that it struggled to get producers?

In a recent interview, R Balki, who was one of the producers for English Vinglish, revealed that nobody was ready to producer the film because it had a female lead. “When Gauri was writing ‘English Vinglish’ nobody was willing to kind of produce it at that point of time because it was going to be shot in the US, with one female lead. They said, ‘How can you have a film with a female lead and spend so much?’” Balki told Radio Nasha Official.

“And I said, ‘What do you mean by female lead? I don’t understand the word ‘female lead.’ I mean, there’s a person there, an actor. They said it won’t recover. So by accident, we thank god I met Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and then it happened. But ‘English Vinglish’ happened very differently,” the filmmaker added.

R Balki further revealed that he had discussed a different project with Sridevi but that could not be made. He shared that all this had happened when Gauri (Shinde, Director) was already writing English Vinglish. Therefore, he later organised a meeting between Gauri and Sridevi, and the two decided to work together on this film.

English Vinglish marked Sridevi’s comeback to the big screen after 15 years. The film also starred Adil Hussain in a key role and was a bix hit on the box office. While English Vinglish was made with just Rs 10 crore, it had a box office collection of over Rs 100 crore.
