Afghanistan started the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka by winning the first match by six wickets. Batting first, Sri Lanka posted a defendable total of 268 runs. Charith Aslanka emerged as his team’s top scorer with a crucial knock of 91 runs. In the series opener in Hambantota, Fareed Ahmed and Fazalhaq Farooqui took two wickets each. Afghanistan’s opener Ibrahim Zadran played a strong inning of 98 runs during the chase to give his team a resounding six-wicket win. Zadran stitched a solid 146-run partnership with Rahmat Shah, setting a solid foundation for the series opener. The Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side scored the winning runs with 19 balls to spare. Zadran was adjudged man of the match for his brilliant innings.
Sri Lanka will now aim to stay alive in the series when they take on Afghanistan in the second ODI on Sunday. The last match of the series will be played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota.
