Health officials say Sri Lanka signed agreements this year to buy five million doses of the Pfizer vaccine. The country is expected to receive about 200,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine this month.
President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa “Sri Lanka becomes first country in South Asia to receive a batch of Pfizer vaccines,” it said in a tweet.
State Minister for Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Channa Jayasumana said the Pfizer vaccine will be stored in a special facility developed by the government as the vaccine must be stored at -70 degrees Celsius.
Sri Lankan health authorities have so far used astraZeneca Made in India, Chinese’s SinoPharma and Russian Sputnik V in the country’s fight against Covid-19.
Sri Lanka has seen a sharp rise in positive cases and deaths since April during the traditional New Year celebrations.
The country was under lockdown from mid-May to the end of June. The total number of positive cases in Sri Lanka has gone up to 265,629 with 3,236 deaths.
