Sri Lanka Cricket to deduct salaries of players who fail new stringent fitness test

Sri Lanka Cricket to deduct players’ salary

Players who fail in the examination will be reprimanded by the Board by deducting a part of their annual salary.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has implemented a new set of rules for its contracted players to prevent lapses in fitness. Cricketers will have to go through and pass a more stringent fitness test from next year in order to be considered for selection.

Earlier this year, the cricket board started a fitness test run of 2 kilometres. Players had to complete the race in 8 minutes 35 seconds. However, following a request from the Cricket Advisory Committee, the cutoff time was increased to 8 minutes and 55 seconds. But according to a report in The Sunday Times, cricketers will now have to complete the 2km test in 8 minutes 10 seconds, as the board has introduced strict fitness tests.

Players who fail in the examination will be reprimanded by the Board by deducting a part of their annual salary. Also, if a player does not succeed in completing the run in less than 8 minutes 55 seconds, he will not be considered for selection in the national team. Sri Lanka’s chairman of selectors Pramod Wickremesinghe said his players’ fitness has improved a lot in recent months but they want it to develop further.

“If a player ran 2 km in 8.35 minutes in February, he should now be able to do it in less than 8.10 minutes. We want players to really work hard on their fitness and we will not tolerate lapses in fitness. The first of the four fitness tests will be held on January 7, 2022.

Recent developments in Sri Lankan cricket include the appointment of former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene as the team’s advisory coach from next year.
