Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk responds to criticism over show’s ending

Netflix blockbuster show Squid Game has been watched by millions of subscribers worldwide, earning the American streaming giant around USD 900 million (Rs 67,36,99,50,000). Given its global fame, it was not surprising when American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James, mentioned the show in a press conference. However, LeBron’s opinion on the show’s ending may seem surprising to some. The basketball player’s thoughts were shared by sports writer Kyle Goon in a video tweeted on October 13.

LeBron was heard telling his partner, Anthony Davis, “I didn’t like the ending though.” LeBron said that the protagonist Seong Gee-hun, played by Lee Jung Jae, should have just taken off and left instead of coming back. The 36-year-old also said that the player should leave after being satisfied with the amount of money he wins.

More than 1.8 million users watched the video and it seems that the show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk was also made aware of LeBron’s thoughts. Speaking to the Guardian, Hwang responded to LeBron’s opinion on his show. The 50-year-old filmmaker said, “LeBron James is calm and he can say whatever he wants. I respect him. I am so thankful that he has seen the entire series.” Hwang said that he would not change the ending of the show, despite what some people said. “That’s the end of me. If he has his own ending that will satisfy him, maybe he can make his own sequel,” Hwang told The Guardian. Hwang also added a bit of sass, saying, “I’ll have a look at it and maybe Will send him a message saying, ‘I liked your entire show, except the ending’.”

The Squid Game premiered on Netflix on September 17th and has emerged as the streaming giant’s biggest show ever, beating past original shows like Bridgerton, The Witcher. The show exposes the dark side of capitalism and the growing gap between rich and poor.
