The Federal Aviation Administration issued the long-awaited license on Friday. SpaceX announced that Starship could fly as soon as Monday

SpaceX has passed the final hurdle to launch its new giant Starship from Texas on the first test flight early next week.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued the long-awaited license on Friday. SpaceX announced that Starship – the world’s largest and most powerful rocket – could take off as soon as Monday.

No people or satellites will be aboard the 394-foot (120 m) rocket. SpaceX will attempt to send spacecraft atop giant boosters around the world, from the southern tip of Texas to Hawaii. The first stage will be dropped in the Gulf of Mexico and the spacecraft will be dropped in the Pacific Ocean. No landing would be attempted for this debut.

It will be the first launch attempt of the full-size Starship, which is made of shiny stainless steel and powered by methane-fueled engines.

The FAA said SpaceX met all requirements, including safety and environmental ones. The license is valid for five years.

“We carefully analyzed the public safety risks during every phase of the mission and the measures SpaceX was required to mitigate those risks,” the FAA said.

Musk envisions using starships to send people to the Moon and Mars. NASA has already signed up for a Starship to send astronauts to the lunar surface as early as 2025.
