South Korea says retrieves wreckage of North Korean spy satellite

South Korea’s military said Wednesday it has recovered debris from a North Korean spy satellite that fell into the sea after a failed launch in May and found it incapable of military surveillance.

The military recovered parts of the rocket used in the failed launch of North Korea’s first military satellite last month after the booster and payload crashed into the sea shortly after take-off.

“After a detailed analysis on the North Korean space launch vehicle and major salvaged parts of the satellite, South Korean and US experts have assessed that they had no military utility as a reconnaissance satellite,” the military said in a statement.

The army in the south said it had ended its rescue operation on Wednesday.
