Johannesburg: fw de klerk, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Nelson Mandela and saw the end of the country’s white minority rule as South Africa’s last apartheid president, has died at the age of 85.
A spokesman for the FW de Klerk Foundation confirmed on Thursday that de Klerk died after a battle against cancer at his home in the Fresnay area of Cape Town.
It was de Klerk who announced in a speech to the Parliament of South Africa on 2 February 1990 that Mandela would be released from prison after 27 years. An electrifying declaration to a country that was despised and sanctioned for decades by much of the world for its brutal system of racial discrimination known as racial discrimination.
