South African Omicron patient leaves Bengaluru with fake RT-PCR report, four arrested

The 66-year-old South African national had arrived in Bengaluru on November 20 and was tested positive after being screened at the Bengaluru airport. They had checked in at Shangri La, a hotel in Bengaluru, and the FIR states that the BBMP officials, along with the hotel staff, directed the 66-year-old to remain in quarantine for 14 days.

Despite telling the hotel staff about his quarantine, he was allowed out on November 27. When inquired about this, the hotel staff informed the authorities that they had prepared a COVID-19 negative report, checked out on 27 November, took a taxi to Bengaluru airport and left for Dubai went.

According to reports, the South African national wanted to return to his country and hence contacted two of his employees regarding the same. The two employees then approached a private lab near Electronics City and allegedly bribed lab technicians to prepare fake negative RT-PCR reports by November 26.

The very next day he handed over the fake negative RT-PCR report to the hotel and airport authorities and took off for South Africa. His genome sequencing report came on 2 December, making him one of the first two individuals in the country to test positive for the Omicron variant.

All the 24 primary contacts and 240 secondary contacts have been traced and samples have been taken by the Urban Primary Health Center officials. All have tested negative.
