A hospital worker was injured after he was dragged on the road by a scooter when he caught a man snatching his mobile phone at a traffic signal here, police said on Friday.
A senior official said that though the robbers escaped at that time, the police identified and apprehended one of them after examining the footage of the CCTV camera.
The man who has been arrested was riding in the back. Police said it was his jacket which was grabbed by the woman and dragged for about 100 meters before falling near a car.
He said the incident took place on Thursday evening at around 5.30 pm in the Shalimar Bagh area of northwest Delhi when Payal, 23, a front office assistant at Fortis Hospital, was returning home from work.
Passersby took her to the hospital where she was treated for her knee injury. Police said that he was discharged on Thursday.
He said that the information about the snatching was received by the Shalimar Bagh police station at around 6.40 pm on Thursday and teams were formed to nab the suspects.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West) Usha Rangnani said that the person who was driving the scooter has also been identified and the police team is on the lookout for him.
So far this year, 470 snatchers and 357 robbers have been apprehended or arrested in the North West district. Out of which 89 have been arrested or arrested by the Shalimar Bagh Police Station.
Rangnani said a case under sections 392 (punishment for dacoity) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Shalimar Bagh police station.
A video of snatching has gone viral on social media.
The incident happened on the day the nation remembered ‘Nirbhaya’, a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern who was gang-raped and brutally assaulted on a moving bus in South Delhi on December 16, 2012. He died a fortnight later.
