Bipin Laxman Singh Rawat Whom we know as General Bipin Rawat. He was the Chief of Defense Staff. General Rawat was born on 16 March 1958 in the Chauhan Rajput family of Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. General Rawat’s mother was from the Parmar dynasty.

Their ancestors came from Mayapur/Hariddar and settled in Parsai village of Garhwal, they were called Parasara Rawat. Actually, Rawat is a military title given to Rajputs by the rulers of Garhwal. His father, Lieutenant General Laxman Singh Rawat, had retired from the army as a lieutenant general. Rawat started his career in 1978 with the 5th Battalion of the Eleventh Gorkha Rifles.

Rawat attended Cambrian Hall School in Dehradun, St Edward’s School in Shimla and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. Here he was given the ‘Sword of Honour’. He is a graduate of Defense Services Staff College, Wellington and has also done Higher Command course at Fort Leavenworth, USA. He also did MPhil in Defense Studies, Diploma in Management and Diploma in Computer Studies from Madras University. In 2011, he was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut for his research on Military-Media Strategic Studies.

CDS was formed two years ago
Former Army Chief General Bipin Rawat (61) was appointed the country’s first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) in 2019. He was to remain in this post till the age of 65. The purpose of making this post is so that proper and effective coordination can be done. In the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Rawat became a commissioned officer (11 Gorkha Rifles) in December 1978. He became the Chief of the Army Staff on 31 December 2016.
