Tech entrepreneur Carl Pei, who founded Nothing and was instrumental in building OnePlus into a successful brand, recently shared his opinion about smartwatches. In a recent tweet, Pei admitted that he bought the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro, but doesn’t know what to use it for. He added, that it “seems like a waste.”

Pei’s candid admission of his own smartwatch use raises an interesting question about the widespread appeal of these devices. He also expressed curiosity about how other people use their smartwatches.

It’s worth noting that smartwatches have been around for a while now. The first Android Wear watch—the LG G Watch—was released in 2014. And, since then, several OEMs have been trying their hand at making them, including tech giants like Samsung and traditional watch brands like Fossil.

However, Apple has always sat on the premium end of the spectrum with its highly popular Apple Watch, which has been a dominant smartwatch in the market. Despite this, no CEO other than Pei has yet called smartwatches ‘useless’.

This begs the question why would Pei buy the new Galaxy Watch 5 Pro if there is no interest in smartwatches and their growing market. In a later tweet, Pei mentioned that he is “learning about the category.” Perhaps Nothing is considering the prospect of launching its own smartwatch to complement its wider ecosystem, which already includes the Nothing Phone (1) and wireless earbuds like the Nothing Ear (Stick) and Ear (1) which are already available in the market.

Responding to Carl Pei’s tweet, several users stressed the importance of fitness tracking when it comes to smartwatches. One user said, “I mainly use the Apple Watch to track calories burned (average because it’s not very accurate) and then the heart rate and vo2 max estimates are good too.”

While some users shared their experiences of using the smartwatch for fitness tracking, one user expressed disapproval of Pei’s comment and sarcastically congratulated him for getting a “fancy wrist accessory you didn’t know you had.” what to do with.” He continued, “Don’t worry, it’s not like it can track your fitness, keep you engaged, control your music, make mobile payments or help you manage your time.” Can do.

It remains to be seen if Nothing is actually going to launch a smartwatch in the near future – and if it’s going to be based on Wear OS – on which other popular Android watches like the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro and Galaxy Watch 5 are based. Are.
