Slight improvement in flood situation in Tripura, one feared to be washed away

The flood situation in Tripura improved marginally on Sunday and there was no fresh rain even as one person was feared to have been washed away in the waters of the Katkhal river, an official said. He said that the water level of Howra river had crossed the danger mark of 10.80 metres, flooding the low-lying areas of Agartala Municipal Corporation and its neighborhood on Saturday, now flowing below the warning limit (9.02 metres), he said. Meanwhile, a person identified as Siraj Miya of Maylakhola under Sadar sub-division was reportedly washed away in Katkhal river, a tributary of Howrah, an official of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said. . The official said that his body has not been recovered yet.

About 12,000 people were rendered homeless due to flash floods caused by torrential rains on Friday in three districts of West Tripura, Unakoti and North Tripura, he said. He said that 45 relief camps have been set up. In the Sadar subdivision alone, over 11,000 people have been forced to take shelter in 42 camps, the SDMA official said.
