Slap on challan, attack on horse: 12 times politicians lost their cool on camera

Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar was caught on camera hitting a party volunteer who tried to put his hand on his shoulder. The incident took place when the Congress leader was in Mandya on Friday for a health check-up of the party MP.

Shivakumar slapped the party worker who was accompanying him, who tried to put his hand on the leader’s shoulder. “What is this behavior at this place? I have given you freedom, but that doesn’t mean you can do it,” DKS reportedly said.

This is not the first time a political leader has publicly lost his temper. There have been many similar cases in the past; here are some of them:

When Shivraj Singh Chouhan slapped his bodyguard: In 2018, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was caught on video slapping his bodyguard during a campaign rally. After this, Chouhan continued the campaign as if nothing had happened. The BJP leaders were in Sardarpur town to campaign ahead of the municipal elections to be held later this month.

Congress MLA slaps female constable: In December 2017, Asha Kumari, a Congress MLA from Dalhousie, was caught slapping a woman constable who was trying to stop her from entering an event, which also featured Rahul Gandhi, in Shimla. However, the constable also retaliated and slapped Kumari back.

When an Air India employee was hit by a Shiv Sena MP: In 2017, Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad hit an Air India employee with his shoe after he was not allotted a business class seat on an all economy flight. The incident triggered a nationwide debate on VVIP culture in the country.

NCP MLA slaps Deputy Collector: In 2016, Suresh Lad, Nationalist Congress Party MLA from Karjat in Raigad district, came into limelight for slapping a deputy collector and an employee of a private firm over the issue of land acquisition for a gas pipeline project.

When a BJP MLA’s husband thrashed a police officer for issuing a challan: In 2017, the husband of Rajasthan Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Chandrakanta Meghwal thrashed a police officer for issuing a challan to a party worker’s vehicle.

When a BJP MLA was booked for assaulting a horse: In 2016, BJP Mussoorie MLA Ganesh Joshi allegedly attacked a police horse during a rally in Dehradun. During the program near the assembly, which took place during a protest organized by the BJP against the state government, the animal suffered multiple fractures. The horse was immediately brought to the District Veterinary Officer for treatment. In the end the horse died.

SP MLC’s nephew slaps police officer: Boasting about his political ties, the nephew of Samajwadi Party MLC Ramesh Yadav was caught on camera bragging about his association with the party in 2017. Later he slaps and abuses a policeman standing beside him. “My name is Mohit Yadav…,” the accused continued.

War on over speeding fine: In a setback from 2013, a group of MLAs thrashed a policeman for “misbehaving” with fellow MLA Kshitij Thakur. The victim had reportedly fined Thakur for over speeding. And if that wasn’t enough, the victim was later suspended by Maharashtra. The police were “not worthy of a police officer”, citing their language.

Maha BJP leader slaps police constable: In August 2016, another police constable suffered tantrums from an “out of hand” politician. In Maharashtra, BJP MLA Ramchandra Awasare slapped a police constable inside the police station in front of several other officers. The constable had an argument with one of Avasare’s drivers over a bike rally.

BJP leader slams Commissioner’s personal secretary: In September last year, at the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation office, a BJP leader allegedly asked the commissioner’s private secretary to make him and his men wait and did not allow them to meet the commissioner to discuss some concerns, which he wanted to discuss. After the fight, the employees of the civic body opposed the BJP workers, while the BJP workers also demonstrated against the commissioner by raising slogans and placards.
