Thakur reminded him of the Ekta Yatra undertaken by the then BJP president Murli Manohar Joshi and Narendra Modi in 1992, who unfurled the national tricolor at Lal Chowk in Srinagar.

He said, ‘There was a lot of opposition to the yatra at that time. Terrorist attacks happened, firing incidents happened. It was because there was a Congress government there.

The BJP leader also recalled the Tiranga Yatra undertaken by him in 2011 as president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha.

Thakur said, “The then leaders of opposition in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha – Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley – and I were put in jail because the Congress-National Conference government opposed the Tiranga Yatra.”

“Things were difficult when Articles 370 and 35A were still in force,” he said. He said that the situation in the Kashmir Valley has improved a lot under the Modi government.
