Situation in Kandahar ‘grave’ as Taliban claim to seize Afghan’s second largest city: Report

New Delhi: After the capture of Ghazni, the Taliban armed group has entered the city of Kandahar and an intense battle is underway to save the city from occupation, al Jazeera Local residents disclosed.

According to the report, some residents described the situation in Afghanistan’s second largest city as “serious”, with fierce fighting between militants and government forces going on.

The development comes after a Taliban armed group took control of Ghazni, the capital of Ghazni province, about 130 km (80 mi) southwest of the capital, Kabul.

It became the 10th provincial capital to come under the rebels within a few days.

The Taliban have reportedly claimed to have captured the city of Kandahar, but there are no media reports to confirm this.

So far, local media reports and updates on social media only speak of the situation intensifying with fighting taking place in Afghanistan’s second largest city.

Kandahar is home to around 400,000 residents and is an important city for the government to protect at all costs.

Meanwhile, in a major development, Afghan government negotiators in Qatar have offered a power-sharing deal with the Taliban to end the ongoing violence in the country, AFP news agency reported.

“Yes, the government has submitted a proposal to Qatar as a mediator. The offer allows the Taliban to share power in exchange for stopping violence in the country,” a source close to the news agency said.

In a recent update, AFP reported that the Taliban have captured the Herat police headquarters in western Afghanistan.
