Manish Sisodia’s remarks came after he failed to elect the mayor for the third time in a month on Monday following an uproar over allowing nominated members to vote in the election to the post.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday hit out at the BJP over the adjournment of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi House and said the party only believed in hooliganism and was not allowing the mayor’s election to take place.

Sisodia told a press conference that the BJP wanted to run the MCD forcibly and that is why it was creating ruckus in the House.

His comments came after the Municipal House failed to elect a mayor for the third time in a month on Monday following an uproar over allowing nominated members to vote in the election for the position.

Soon after the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House assembled, Presiding Officer Satya Sharma announced that aldermen would be allowed to vote in the elections for mayor, deputy mayor and standing committee members that would be held simultaneously.

AAP councilors objected to this.

Sisodia said, ‘BJP wants to run the MCD forcibly and that is why it is creating ruckus in the House.’

He said, ‘The AAP corporator was sitting silently, then the BJP created a ruckus. The ruckus created by BJP shows that party does not believe in constitution, laws and they only believe in hooliganism.

The Deputy Chief Minister alleged that the BJP was running the MCD with the help of officials and taking wrong decisions.

He said, the results of the MCD elections came on December 7 and today is February 6. AAP had got a clear mandate but the BJP is not allowing the mayor’s election to take place.

He also claimed that the BJP tried to “buy” AAP corporators but none of them accepted its offer.

As per the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act, 1957, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are to be elected in the very first session of the House after the civic elections. However, it has been two months since the municipal elections were held on December 4 and Delhi is yet to get a mayor.
