The man, identified as Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Vitwa in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, was later arrested on charges of lynching.
Questioning his claim, Jaspreet Kaur and Raj Kaur said that Lakhbir Singh had “deep respect for the holy Guru Granth Sahib”.
Jaspreet Kaur said, “He was a God-fearing man who could never think of desecrating a holy book. Whenever he used to visit a gurudwara, he would for the betterment of his family and society. prayed for.”
The victim’s family stated that he had no criminal record and there were no reports of his bad character, and demanded a high-level inquiry into the entire episode to bring out the truth.
Jaspreet and Raj Kaur said that if it is assumed even for a moment that Lakhbir had done something wrong, the people who killed him so brutally should have given him time to prove their innocence, or they He could have been handed over to the police.

His family members, including sister-in-law Simranjit Kaur and mother-in-law Savinder Kaur, told the media that Lakhbir Singh and his sister Raj Kaur were adopted by Harnam Singh, a retired army personnel, without any problems.

The family claimed that Lakhbir had no links with any political organization and never went to any political rally in support of any political figure.
His sister Raj Kaur said, “My brother had only Rs 50 with him when he left the house and that money was not enough to reach the Singhu border but he must have reached there by taking a lift from a tractor trolley or truck.”
