New Delhi: Olympic bound- Simranjit Kaurhandjob Commonwealth Games gold medalist Gaurav Solanki And world championship silver winner Sonia Chahal has been nominated for the Arjuna Award Boxing Federation of India.
Simranjit (60kg) is the bronze winner of the 2018 World Championships and is among the four Indian women boxers who have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, starting next month.
Solanki (57kg) won Commonwealth Games gold in the 2018 edition, while Chahal (57kg) claimed his world silver in the same year. He is also a former national champion. Neither of them could make it to the Olympics.
“The three names have been finalized on the basis of their performance in the last four years,” BFI general secretary Hemant Kalita told PTI.
The Arjuna Award carries a prize money of Rs 15 lakh.
The federation has also decided to nominate women’s assistant coach Sandhya Gurung and national youth head coach Bhaskar Bhatt for the Dronacharya award.
The pair of Manish Kaushik and Lovlina Borgohain, who won bronze at the World Championships last year, were awarded the Arjuna Award.
Monday was the last date for filing nominations for the National Sports Awards to be given every year on August 29 on the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
Last year, 74 recipients were conferred with the awards.
The prize money has also increased substantially with Khel Ratna awardees getting Rs 25 lakh, Dronacharya (lifetime) Rs 15 lakh and Dhyan Chand winners getting Rs 10 lakh.
