Sidharth writes apology to Saina Nehwal for ‘rude joke’: ‘No intention to attack you as woman’

Actor Sidharth on Tuesday apologized to Saina Nehwal on Twitter after receiving an overwhelming response for her “rude joke” on the badminton star. A tweet commenting on Saina’s remarks on the lapse in security of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Punjab visit by Sidharth had netizens. fume

In his apology posted on Twitter, Siddharth wrote, “Dear Saina, I want to apologize to you for my rude joke written a few days ago as a reply to one of your tweets. I may disagree with you on many things but when I read your tweet, even my frustration or anger cannot justify my tone and words. I know I have more grace than this.”

Apologizing for the joke further, Sidharth said, “To joke, if a joke needs to be explained, it was not a very good joke in the beginning. Sorry for a joke that didn’t land. The emphasis must be on word play and there was no malicious intent of humour, for which so many people from all walks of life have been blamed for it. I am a staunch feminist ally and I can assure you that there is no gender implied in my tweets and certainly had no intention of attacking you as a woman. I hope we can put this behind us and you will accept my letter. You will always be my champion.”

The National Commission for Women on Tuesday asked Twitter to block Sidharth’s account for his “lewd and inappropriate” tweets against Saina Nehwal. The NCW also wrote to the Maharashtra Police, demanding registration of an FIR against them.

The NCW claimed that the remarks were “anti-woman, outraged the modesty of a woman and insulted and insulted the dignity of women”.

“The Commission condemns such lewd and inappropriate remarks made by the actor and has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter. Speaker Rekha Sharma has written a letter to the DGP of Maharashtra asking her to investigate the matter immediately and register an FIR under the relevant provisions of law. The panel has demanded prompt and strict action against women for using abusive language against them on social media.

Last week, Saina Nehwal had shared her views on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security breach. He wrote, ‘No country can claim to be safe if its own PM’s security is compromised. In the strongest possible words, I condemn the cowardly attack on PM Modi by anarchists.” (sic)

On this, Siddharth had written, citing Saina’s tweet, ‘Micro rooster champion of the world… thank God we have India’s saviors. Shame on you #Rihanna.” (sic)

Badminton player Parupalli Kashyap, husband of Saina Nehwal, also expressed displeasure over Siddharth’s tweet. Tagging Siddharth in a tweet on Monday, Parupalli Kashyap wrote, ‘This is disturbing for us. Express your opinion but choose better words man! I guess you thought it was cool to say it that way. #notcool #shameful.”
