‘Shubman Gill Not Doing Justice to His Talent by Getting Out in 50s or 60s’: Sunil Gavaskar

Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar feels that Shubman Gill will have to score hundreds at regular intervals to make it to the 2023 ODI side. World cup. Shubman has been a part of the ODI set-up for the past few months and has been scoring consistently but has somehow struggled to convert half-centuries into triple-digit scores.

He has played 15 matches so far in which he has scored 687 runs at an impressive average of 57.25. He has scored four half-centuries and one century in his career so far.

The new selection committee will have to sort out a number of problems while selecting the openers for the ODI World Cup to be played in India next year.

Gavaskar feels Shikhar Dhawan has the advantage of being a left-handed batsman as every team looks for a left-right combination at the top and the southpaw also has enough experience to claim.

“You’re always looking for a left-right combination. Shikhar brings with him left-handedness and a lot of experience that he has. I think he has a point or two to prove in that sense.” He might be saying that the kind of record he has in T20 cricket, he should also play,” Gavaskar said on Sony Sports.

Gavaskar praised the young Gill but suggested that he was not doing justice to his talent by not converting his fifties into three-figure scores.

“It means someone like Shubman Gill has to score hundreds and hundreds. Not the 50s and 60s that they are getting. He’s a brilliant talent, make no mistake. He is a rare talent. But he is not doing justice to his talent by getting out in the 50s or 60s. Yes, sometimes I understand you are trying to increase the scoring rate, but they have to convert those 50s and 60s into hundreds and 120s. Those knocks make a difference to the result.
