Shruti Haasan on ‘bestseller’: It feels serious that Mithun da was part of my acting debut and my first OTT series – Times of India

Shruti Haasan An exciting, psychological drama is all set to debut on OTT with ‘Bestseller’. The actress plays the lead in the episode, which is an adaptation of Ravi Subramaniam’s novel, The Bestseller She Wrote. Helmed by Mukul Abhyankar, ‘Bestseller’ stars Mithun Chakraborty, Arjan Bajwa, Gauahar KhanSatyajit Dubey, and Sonali Kulkarni, Ahead of her debut, Shruti spoke about the show:

What was your first reaction when you were offered a ‘bestseller’? Have you read the book?
If you haven’t read the book, I would encourage people to watch the show first. I haven’t even read the book. I didn’t want to be influenced by the book because it was adapted for a visual medium quite differently. So I wanted to stick to that. I have always been a fan of OTT platforms and the kind of storytelling style that is long, episodic. And I always knew I wanted to do something that was led by women. And when I was approached for the ‘bestseller’, I was really excited. When I read the script, I thought it was amazingly moving. I was so excited to play it outside the park. I want people to meet this woman, she is very different.

You have a huge responsibility as the lead in ‘Bestseller’. What new thing have you discovered with this series?

I have always felt responsible for all my roles. And I think when a director gives you a role, you handle it. You embrace that person, you become the custodian of their intention. And that’s always my point of view, whether it’s a small role or a female lead role like in this series. Having said that, I do think that as a woman, portraying a female character can be like mixing different things into one.

Where did you find the inspiration for this gritty psychological thriller? Did you relate to the character at all?
No not really. Not with this character as he is from a completely different background than me. She has had a very different cultural upbringing than me, the story is very different to mine. Usually I don’t find myself in most of the characters I play. I don’t think I’ve actually played a character yet that really looks like me! What’s interesting about playing this role, however, is the way those layers are explored. You see them in different types of women and their motivations are totally different. There was no resemblance I could draw, except that he is quite flexible like me.

After working with Mithun Chakraborty in his debut film ‘Luck’ (2012), you are reuniting with him for your OTT debut ‘Bestseller’. How have things changed after a decade?
I think a lot has changed for me. To be honest, I have changed dramatically as a person. I also found it almost odd that my first film was Mithun Da and then for my first OTT, where I am in the lead role, Mithun Da. So I consider it a good sign. I think I have changed a lot in terms of understanding. And I said this before, that it’s about the people we’re playing and it’s about the people we encounter while making movies, and it’s very important that the good things come out to you. Be acknowledged and valued for those who really help. you ahead. I don’t think I had a sense of it before and have the same sense of hope as I did before starting ‘Luck’ the way I haven’t changed and worked really hard to go back Was. , Like I have so much to do and a lot to say. And I think as you keep working out for a few days, it feels like you’re a little tired, you know, and then my inner fire for artistry and for business and as a woman To work really hard to wake up again.

Lastly, what should audiences expect from a ‘bestseller’?
I think it is a very multi-layered show and it is thrilling in the way the story is told. Because of the format too, you get more time to understand the motivations and mindset of the characters. So it’s interesting to see how each character develops and why they develop that way. And I think people will enjoy it.
