‘Should Have Talked To Siraj’: Legendary Batter Critical Of India Pacer For Getting Away

On the fifth day of the first Test match between India and South Africa, an incident happened which was likely to turn ugly. During the 62nd over of South Africa’s innings, Mohammad Siraj, on his own bowling, threw the ball at batsman Temba Bavuma, who did not move from the crease, apparently to attempt a run out.

However, the ball hit Bavuma’s calf, causing him some pain, which eventually required the intervention of the team physio. Realizing his mistake, Siraj reached out to the South African batsman and apologized to him for his actions.

Bavuma, however, recovered from the pain and resumed his innings as India registered a historic 1-0 win in the Centurion Test in the three-match series. On social media, fans criticized Siraj’s throw and on-air batting legend Sunil Gavaskar also slammed the pacer for ‘taking it away’.

Gavaskar commented on the incident saying, “There was no attempt to take a run. You are a bit aggressive, you are a bit deluded. But if there was an attempt to run, it would have been understandable. There it is. There.” He didn’t take the run. There was no need, it wasn’t needed at all. Siraj needs to be talked to. At the end of the day, Temba Bavuma was so kind when Siraj gave him the thumbs up.”

Bavuma remained unbeaten on 35 for 80 as South Africa were bundled out for 191 while chasing 305. The second Test of the series begins on Monday at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

India are expected to remain unchanged for the second game unless there are injury concerns as skipper Virat Kohli will not want to tinker with the winning combo. However, South Africa may involve a change including the need for the replacement of wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock, who has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect.
