Should have never listened to Dravid: Murali reveals Sehwag’s confession after 300 went missing

New Delhi: The former star opener of the Indian cricket team, Virender Sehwag was known for his flamboyant batting style. The hard working opener played some exceptionally explosive knocks in his cricketing career. The right-handed batsman has scored two triple centuries in his Test career.

Sehwag had missed out on scoring the third triple century of his career against Sri Lanka in 2009 by just 7 runs. Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan, one of the world’s greatest spinners about this Test match, recalled that Test match and Sehwag’s brilliant innings and revealed that Viru had told him that he should ‘reveal Rahul Dravid’s suggestion about his triple century. Shouldn’t have heard.

“I remember he was batting on 290 against us in Mumbai and I think Dravid told him to stop because he can score 300 the next day. The next morning, he tried to tap it, but was caught out and bowled and told me ‘I should have never listened to Rahul and followed you instead’, Murali told ESPNcricinfo.

This incident is from the third Test played between India and Sri Lanka in 2009. Sri Lanka were all out for 393 in their first innings. At the end of the second day’s play, Sehwag returned unbeaten on 283 runs. It was expected that Sehwag would soon complete his third triple century on the third day, but he was dismissed for 293 while trying to take a single off Muralitharan.

Sehwag completed his maiden Test triple century in 2004 against Pakistan at the Multan ground by hitting a six off Saqlain Mushtaq. The star batsman has scored 8586 runs at an average of 49.34 in his Test career spanning 104 Test matches.
