Shivraj government in Madhya Pradesh may move Supreme Court on OBC quota issue

Bhopal: As politics continues over the issue of reservation quota for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in Madhya Pradesh, the Shivraj Chouhan government is planning to approach the Supreme Court on the matter.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court, which is currently hearing about three dozen petitions on a proposed increase in the OBC quota from 14% to 27%, on July 13 refused to allow the increase, and asked the state government to pay 14%. Directed to continue the recruitment by using OBC reservation.

On Wednesday evening, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had called a meeting of the BJP OBC cell and it was decided that the state government would approach the Supreme Court on the issue of reservation.

Besides, the meeting also discussed raising the OBC creamy layer’s annual limit from the current Rs 8 lakh to Rs 12 lakh per annum, a senior BJP leader said.

State chief of BJP OBC cell Bhagat Singh Kushwaha said that MLAs, MPs and OBC cell leaders attended the meeting, besides discussing the HC’s decision to limit the OBC quota to 14% for the time being.

He said that the state government would pursue the matter as per the prescribed norms.

On Tuesday, the HC had allowed the state government to conduct recruitments with 14% OBC quota norm and keep 13% reservation benefits in reserve till the final orders.

Following the controversy over the OBC quota, which was raised to 27% by the then CM Kamal Nath, a large number of recruitments have been put on hold as the HC is yet to settle the matter. The state government on Tuesday had sought HC’s guidelines on the recruitment of medical officers and others ahead of a possible covid19 third wave.

The Congress is mounting pressure on the BJP government to ensure that the OBCs benefit from the 27% quota.
