Shivnarine Chanderpaul appointed West Indies Under-19 batting consultant

Former West Indies cricketer Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been appointed as the batting consultant of the Under-19 national team for the high performance camp to be held in Antigua ahead of next year’s World Cup.

The 47-year-old left-handed batsman, who has played 164 Tests, 268 ODIs and 22 T20Is, scoring a total of 20,988 runs for West Indies, will attend the preparatory camp to be held in Coolidge from November 15 to 28. Cricket Grounds in Antigua.

With the World Cup to be held in the Caribbean in January-February next year, Chanderpaul will join Floyd Reifer (head coach), Rohan Nurse (assistant coach) and Curtly Ambrose (bowling coach) in the team’s preparations.

“Shiva has tremendous cricketing knowledge and know-how and will be a great addition to the coaching staff,” Cricket West Indies (CWI) Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams said in a statement.

“We already have another icon of the sport in Sir Curtley Ambrose, who has been associated with the team since the camp in August, as well as many other outstanding coaches.”

After the last camp and trial matches held in August, the selection panel has selected 28 players for this camp.

It includes two newcomers who will be assessed by coach and selector Jaden Leacock, a right-arm fast-medium bowler and right-handed batsman, and Kevin Wickham, a right-handed batsman and right-arm wrist spinner.

CWI’s lead selector for West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 Robert Haynes said he was looking forward to meeting the players.

“Following the 18-man West Indies Under-19 team’s tour of England after a month-long camp in Antigua in August, I look forward to seeing the continued progress and improvement of various players as well as interacting with them. And to understand the attitude towards the game.

“The two-week camp will consist of four practice matches, coupled with continued skill and physical development, and is an opportunity for all players to claim for the series at home and selection for the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup.”

West Indies Under-19 is preparing for the ICC Under-19 World Cup, which will be held in the Caribbean from January 4 to February 3, 2022.
