In a meeting with Amit Shah, the two leaders from Maharashtra are understood to have discussed the broad contours of the power-sharing formula between the BJP and the Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputy Devendra Fadnavis are to meet the Prime Minister Narendra Modi And BJP President JP Nadda on Saturday took steps towards the formation of his council of ministers as new allies. Shinde and Fadnavis, who took office on June 30, a day after the then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray faced a massive rebellion, are also expected to make a courtesy call on President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu.

The two Maharashtra leaders met Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday night and are understood to have discussed the broad contours of the power-sharing formula between the BJP and the Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction. I am sure that under the guidance of Narendra Modi, both of you will serve the people sincerely and will take Maharashtra to new heights of development.

Shinde and Fadnavis’s visit to the national capital comes ahead of a crucial hearing in the Supreme Court on July 11 on a plea by Thackeray-led Shiv Sena to disqualify Shinde and 15 MLAs of his faction. “We have faith in the judiciary and the group led by him has the support of two-thirds of Shiv Sena MLAs,” Shinde told reporters in the national capital. Before the split triggered by Shinde’s rebellion, the Shiv Sena had 55 MLAs. Shinde was supported by around 40 Shiv Sena MLAs, who also have the support of independents and legislators from smaller organisations.

The speaker has also given us recognition, he said, referring to the decision of newly elected president Rahul Narvekar. Shinde was sworn in as chief minister on June 30 with the support of the BJP, when he rebelled against the then chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, following the fall of the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi government with a large chunk of MLAs from the Shiv Sena.

Shinde had won the trust vote in the Maharashtra Assembly on July 4.
