Shefali Shah: I get scared when I come in front of the camera, I don’t know what I am doing. Unique

After the tremendous success of Delhi Crime, Shefali Shah is back with another intense web series, Human, produced by her husband Vipul Shah. The actress plays Dr Gauri Nath in the medical drama, a role that took her out of her comfort zone and challenges her every day. Shefali confessed during a candid conversation with News18, “I don’t know if it will work or not.”

Shefali revealed that she has been busier during the pandemic than her entire career. “Roles are being written for me, I am headlining the show,” she says, admitting that Delhi Crime changed the game for her. Read on for more from the conversation with him.

Vipul Shah had been developing Human for a long time. Were you involved from the beginning?

No, they started working on it a long time ago. And he was working towards making it a film. Yes, I remember we had a conversation about what he was planning at the time, but not in that much detail. Then I think further down the line, they felt it was such a broad topic that could not be contained in a two-hour film. So initially, which was many years back, when he worked on the script, I didn’t know much about it.

So when you first realized what kind of character you were being cast, what was your reaction?

I was like, Wow, that’s different than anyone I’ve met, played with, seen or heard about in real life. It was so exciting because I’ve never done anything like this. It’s going to be fun and crazy, because she’s eating a lot.

Will the audience get to see the never-seen-before side of Shefali Shah?

Absolutely. That’s what I try to do with all my organs. He has completely taken me out of my limits. Also, she is written in a certain way. And I have played it in a special way. So from the word Go itself, something like this – I don’t know if this will work. For example, I have a very strong voice recognition. People know that this voice belongs to this person. The pace at which I speak in this character is uncomfortable. Someone from our marketing team saw the show and said, ‘It was very disturbing, everything about your voice, Gauri is very disturbing.’ But then, Gauri is an incomprehensible character.

With your husband as director, did it make the journey easier?

off course not. It is not easy for me to play any character. This is my journey. So no matter how comfortable any director makes me feel, this is my journey. How do I fight my worries, that’s my fight.

After the success of Delhi Crime, is there any pressure on the audience to have special expectations from you?

I like to believe that people really like me, and they are very generous towards me. I don’t expect anything. Every project, I do, I dread. When I go in front of the camera, I get scared, I get scared. I am unsure about myself, most of the times I wonder what am I doing? Because I don’t know what to do. That’s exactly my mindset when I go in front of the camera. And trust me when I say this, have no faith, no one is like, ‘Oh, I know I’ll fix it.’ I am very clear about this, and it works for me.

As an actor, yes, I try to do things that are challenging, exciting and interesting. I am ready to take chances and risks. With Gauri Nath, I have taken a chance with the way I have played her. And I don’t know what the reaction is going to be.

How liberating is it still to get roles that challenge you, give you the space and power to do what you want to do as a woman?

It’s liberating because I’m finally getting the job I want. Over the years I have been a part of many great projects. I don’t have a very long resume but I have a strong resume. But things have changed since two years ago. Delhi Crime changed it all for me. People are writing scripts for me, I am headlining shows, I am playing parallel leads, with incredible directors, great scripts. So I thank God, at last!

What else are you looking for after Human?

I have never worked as much in my entire life as I did in the last one year. I’m being honest. I did six projects last year. So I think they will all be coming out one by one. I started with Human and then moved to Darlings with Alia Bhatt. Then there is Doctor Ji with Ayushmann Khurrana. It is a lovely film with an ensemble cast. This is a part which is important for the film, I would not say that I am making the title of the film. Then there is a film called Jalsa, then Delhi Crime Season 2 and I ended the year with 3 of Us. So I am waiting for all these projects to come.
