She Was Named After Doctor Who Delivered Her. Today, Lalu’s Daughter is Making Her Name as the ‘Ideal Beti’

In 1979, Dr Kamla Achari – a renowned gynecologist and obstetrician in Bihar – made a fresh request to RJD patron Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Dr Achari, who works at the Patna Medical College and Hospital, had recently helped deliver Yadav’s second child, a girl, through caesarean section, and was approached by the politician to accept his gratitude. Refusing to accept any gift, the doctor had a humble suggestion – to name the newborn baby after him. It was a request that was readily accepted and thus was born Rohini Acharya, who today has come to the aid of her ailing father by donating a kidney.

Born on 1 June 1979, Acharya is a doctor. She married Shamsher Singh, a software engineer and son of Yadav’s college friend Rai Ranvijay Singh, in 2002 and lives in Singapore with her husband, two sons and a daughter.

Before she grabbed headlines for her selfless gesture, Acharya grabbed headlines for targeting the BJP through posts on social media and supporting her family members.

For example, on March 22, 2020 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi Appealed to citizens to bang utensils on their balconies for five minutes to show their support for healthcare workers fighting COVID-19, the 43-year-old opposed his plea.

In 2021, when her father fell ill, Acharya announced on social media that she would practice ‘roza’ during Ramzan to pray for Yadav’s health.

In the latest instance, the politician’s daughter earned praise on social media as well as from Yadav’s detractors, who lauded her for donating her kidney to her ailing father.

Before surgery on 5 December, he said on Twitter: “Ready to rock and roll, wish me luck.” The latest update from his brother Tejashwi Yadav said that both Yadav and his daughter are fine after the transplant in Singapore.

Firebrand BJP leader Giriraj Singh, one of Yadav’s staunchest critics, praised Acharya, who he said had set an example with his gesture.

Earlier, confirming media reports of his donation, Acharya had said on Twitter that it was a “small piece of meat I want to give to my father”.

“This is a small piece of meat I want to give to my father. I would do anything for him. Please pray that things go well and papa is fit again to voice you all. ‘
