Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar’s announcement on Tuesday His decision to step down as chief of the party he founded and led since 1999 surprised many, with activists and office-bearers urging the veteran leader to withdraw his decision.

Hours after resigning, Sharad Pawar’s nephew and party leader Ajit Pawar said the veteran politician has agreed to “rethink” his decision.

BJP leader predicts big change in Maharashtra politics

After NCP president Sharad Pawar announced his decision to step down as the party chief, in what is being seen as a dramatic move that could impact Maharashtra politics, BJP national vice-president Dilip Ghosh on Tuesday did the same. Kind of predicted.

BJP’s National Vice President Dilip Ghosh said that a ‘big change’ is going to happen in the politics of Maharashtra.

NCP committee meets late night, refuses to accept Pawar’s resignation

Sources said after a three-hour-long meeting late last night, the NCP committee members refused to accept Sharad Pawar’s resignation and urged him to continue as party president. Sources said there has also been a suggestion to change the party constitution and create a new working president or a post of that level to help Pawar.

Hours after Sharad Pawar announced that he would quit as NCP president, nephew and party leader Ajit Pawar said the veteran politician has agreed to reconsider his decision.

Ajit Pawar said Everyone was surprised at the book launch where the NCP veteran announced his decision to step down as the party chief – a post he held for 24 years.

“We all gathered for Saheb’s book launch [Pawar], No one thought that he would take such a decision. It was a shock to everyone,” he told reporters at the YB Chavan Center in Mumbai.

There was a stir in the party due to Pawar’s resignation.

Sharad Pawar’s sudden decision to quit as NCP chief has come as a shocker to top party leaders. While some said that Pawar took the decision unilaterally and did not consult them, others tried to pacify the party workers.

Speaking to the media after Sharad Pawar’s announcement, top NCP leader Ajit Pawar said the NCP chief’s resignation as president does not mean he is leaving politics. He said NCP chief Pawar wanted to announce the decision on May 1, but could not because of the MVA rally. Ajit Pawar said, “We hoped that this day would come someday.”

“In the Congress party, Soniaji is still a leader, but she does not have a position. We have to consider his age. All work will be done under his leadership,” Ajit Pawar said.

Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole also reacted to Pawar’s sudden reaction. He said, ‘We thought that Sharad Pawar would continue in public life till his last breath, but we cannot tell why he resigned today. This will not affect the Maha Vikas Aghadi [MVA], We are hopeful that the new NCP president will side with the MVA.”

Sharad Pawar announces to quit as NCP president: ‘Somebody has to stop somewhere’

Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar announced his resignation from his position. Pawar announced his retirement during the release of his autobiography, “Lok Mazhe Sangayi – Political Autobiography”, saying, “I have decided to step down as the President of the NCP.”

Addressing party workers, Pawar said a committee has been formed to decide who will take over the reins of the party and take it forward. Praful Patel, Sunil Tatkare, Ajit Pawar, Jayant Patil and some other senior party leaders will be part of the committee. Supriya Sule, however, did not name Pawar.

Accompanied by his wife Pratibha, 82-year-old Pawar said, “I know when to stop… I have formed a committee of senior NCP leaders, which will decide on the next president.”

However, the Rajya Sabha member for three more years assured that he would remain active in public life through socio-politics like in the last 55 years.
