Shane Bond appointed New Zealand’s “fourth coach” for T20 World Cup

Former fast bowler Shane Bond will join New Zealand’s team as the “fourth coach” during the upcoming T20 World Cup in the UAE. IPL.

After the World Cup, Bond will also accompany the New Zealand team in the three-match T20 International series against India.

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said it was great to add Bond’s experience to the group.

“Shane has been in our environment before and understands what we are about,” Stead said in a statement issued by New Zealand Cricket (NZC).

“Being in the United Arab Emirates (along with the IPL) just ahead of the World Cup he will hopefully bring some tactical insight into what is happening in the competition.

“He will have an extra set of hands especially around the bowlers, working with spin and fast bowlers and developing his plans in a tournament that moves very fast – so we have to be a step ahead of the other teams. need to stay.”

The 46-year-old Bond will resume his role as bowling coach with Mumbai Indians in the remaining matches of the IPL to be held in the UAE from September 19 to October 15, ahead of the T20 World Cup next month.

Bond previously served as the bowling coach of the New Zealand men’s team from 2012 to 2015, and as recently as 2019 helped in the T20I series against England.

Since stepping down as Sydney Thunder coach earlier this year, Bond has been assisting the men’s winter training squads at Lincoln and also helped prepare the women’s side for the tour of England.

Stead has used the services of a fourth coach during the last home summer. The role has been employed for England and Sri Lanka as well as for world events, including the most recent ICC ODI World Cup, where current batting coach Luke Ronchi was the fourth assistant.

“For me the Fourth Coach is an opportunity to bring different voices into the environment and we’ve used that in a number of ways in the past,” Stead said.

“Shane is someone who always adds value and we are happy to have him on board.”
