Shaktikanta Das reappointed as RBI governor for another term of three years

Shaktikanta Das has been re-appointed as the Governor of reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a further period of three years. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved this decision late on Thursday night. The reappointment will be effective from December 10, 2021 when Das’s current term as RBI chief ends. The official statement mentioned, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has recommended the re-appointment of Shaktikanta Das as Governor of Reserve Bank of India, for a further period of three years with effect from 10.12.221 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.” Permission has been granted.”

Shaktikanta Das took over as the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on 12 December. A seasoned bureaucrat, Das has held several important positions in the central and state governments in the areas of finance, taxation, industry, infrastructure, etc. In this appointment, he was Secretary, Department of Revenue and Department of Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance.

During his 38-year long career, he served as Secretary Revenue and later as Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance. Das was secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the high-value currency ban in November 2016.

Das was directly involved in the preparation of eight Union Budgets during his tenure in the Finance Ministry. Prior to his role as RBI chief, Das was a member of the Fifteenth Finance Commission and represented India in the role of a Sherpa at the G20.

With the appointment of Shaktikanta Das as RBI governor, the post went back to an IAS officer, followed by two economist incumbents. Das had bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from Delhi University. Later he did a course in Financial Management from IIM Bangalore. He was a 1980 batch IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre.

Under Das, India’s central bank eased rates to support growth and maintain liquidity during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
