Director Shailesh Kolanu, who directed the Telugu film ‘Hit: The First Case’ starring Vishwa Sen, will also direct the Hindi remake starring Rajkummar Rao.
While it is exciting for a filmmaker to enter a new market with remakes, it also comes with its share of challenges.
“It’s definitely a challenge,” Shailesh told IANS. It doesn’t matter if an original director is doing a remake or not. It’s just that recreating what was once captured is certainly a challenge. Plus, when you remake it. , it will be set in a different location, will have different actors and even the technicians working in it will be different.”
He adds: “I have to maintain the spirit of what I made earlier and at the same time, try to figure out what are the nuances of the actors I am working with right now. Also, my film is very atmospheric, which means I usually add a lot of entertainment to my film. Depending on where the film is set, I have to capture the essence of that location. There may be other directors who will say that they have to recreate it frame by frame but I will not recreate it frame by frame.”
The budget also changes when making a remake. How does a director suit her?
Shailesh replies: “To be honest, you leave out all the remuneration, technicians fees and all that matters to me is how many days I am going to shoot as a director and what scale I am going to shoot. But even for the Telugu version, which was my first film, I stuck to the genre and the world I was creating. My producers Nani and Prashanti basically tried to create that world in the most honest way possible. Whatever money was needed for it, I put it and I am going to do the same work for Hindi also.”
He adds: “For me, I don’t take that (budget) as a criterion for a film remake. For me, the important thing is to make that world in the most honest way and if you work in an organized way you can control the production budget which is what I am doing. Because I want to be called a producer’s director and try to pull it off in the most effective way possible.”
