Shaakuntalam is based on the epic Sanskrit play Abhigyan Shakuntalam by Kalidasa.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu starrer Shakuntalam, which is inspired by the Sanskrit play Abhigyana Shakuntalam by ancient poet Kalidas, released across the cinema halls on Friday. The mythological drama helmed by director Gunasekhar opened to a good response at the box office on its opening day. As per the latest reports, the film has earned $1,25,000 on its first day of premiere in the United States. The film was released in the US by Radhakrishna Entertainments.

Shakuntalam collected Rs 4 crore in Hyderabad, Rs 5 crore in Andhra Pradesh, Rs 10.50 crore in Telangana and Rs 1.20 crore in Rest of India. The film earned Rs 4 crore in other languages, Rs 1.80 crore in overseas and Rs 17.50 crore worldwide.

The film featured Samantha as Shakuntala and actor Dev Mohan as King Dushyant. The film is produced by Neelima Guna under the banner of Guna Teamworks and distributed by Sri Venkateswara Creations. According to sources, people are showing interest in this film as it is a different genre of film in Samantha’s career.

Overall, we will have to wait for a few more days to know how the film fares.

Since the first look of Shakuntalam was released, it was clear that the project was made with a huge budget. According to reports, the film is made in a budget of Rs 60 to 80 crores. It stars a stellar cast including Mohan Babu, Jisshu Sengupta, Madhu, Gautami, Aditi Balan and Ananya Nagalla in supporting roles. The project was announced by Gunasekhar last year. The production of the film began in February 2021 at Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad and ended in August 2021. The major portion of the film was shot extensively around Hyderabad, including Ramoji Film City, Ananthagiri Hills and Gandipet Lake.

Recently Samantha revealed some shocking facts about the film. In a recent interview, she said, ‘I wore a 30 kg lehenga to dance. Dance master Raju sir used to ask, ‘Why can’t you stay in the frame?’ Whenever I used to move the lehenga while dancing, the lehenga used to push me out of the frame. She also said that she would respond by saying, “I’m trying, but the length of the lehenga is taking me out of frame.” Fifteen takes for one shot.
