Seven states put live road accident details in the central database. India News – Times of India

New Delhi: In a move to eliminate discrepancies in road death figures, seven large states, including Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka have gone live this year to upload 90,500 road accidents to a central database called IRAD. This includes 30,114 road accidents in such accidents.
Latest to feed live data in Chhattisgarh Integrated Road Accident Database (IRAD). The data is uploaded when any road accident is registered in these states. Government agencies can now analyze daily, month and yearly trends. Apart from this, the causes of such accidents are also recorded from the spot. Road transport has taken the plan to cover 24 more states soon.
IRAD acquires importance keeping in mind that while government reports state that 1.5 lakh people die in road accidents annually in India, World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated this to be around 2.5 lakh in a year. The data captured by the police has always been questioned by experts.
The figures uploaded by seven states so far indicate a national trend in road accidents. This shows that more than a quarter of the reported accidents – 27,380 out of 90,500 – are fatal and another 22,434 are serious injuries.
As far as the number of persons affected by the crash uploaded in IRAD, 1.32 . out of lakh victims30,,144 died and the rest were injured.
The central database also maintains the records of FIRs registered in accidents and details of how many injured were actually required to be hospitalised. It categorizes accidents according to weather conditions, timing, type of road and junction, traffic violations and pedestrian infrastructure.
“It will address a lot of issues. Once we have robust data, we can analyze them to take the right corrective measures,” said an official.
