Setback for NPP, as 700 supporters of assembly poll candidate switch to BJP

In a jolt to the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) in Meghalaya, around 700 of its members and workers on Monday joined the BJP. He was a supporter of Martin M Dango, the NPP candidate from Ranikor constituency.

The walkers were led by Pelsey Snaitang (woman leader of Ranikor), and among them were former MDC Manstudi Nongrem, Lastbon Pariyong (Chief Advisor of NPP Ranikor), Christopher Lyngdoh (Youth Chairman of NPP Ranikor) and Lengana Sangma (Vice President) . .NPP Ranikor, PK Nongmin (Vice President of NPP Ranikor), Justic Hshah (Young Vice President of NPP Ranikor) and Santosh Sangma (Senior leader of NPP Ranikor).

Stating that relations between the Ranikor NPP leadership and the state party leadership were not smooth, Pelsey said, “We joined the NPP because we wanted to support Dango in Ranikor and make him win again in the upcoming election, But in the last couple of months, we found that our relationship with the NPP state body was not smooth. Now, as you know, the election is very close and we had to make a decision. We, Dango supporters, will try our best to make him win the election. So all Dango supporters of Ranikor decided to leave NPP and then we requested our candidate.

He also claimed that the Original Dango group has 12,000 members, the Original Don Massar has over 3,000 members, and the Original Pelsi group also has about 2,000 members.

“Initially we were in NPP and then we switched to BJP. We want BJP in our constituency. This is mass resignation. Since the leaders are resigning, we supporters will also resign,” said TD Marak, one of Dango’s supporters.

Asserting that their leader is MM Dango, supporters said around 13,000 are resigning from the NPP and joining the BJP.

“We are resigning from NPP in large numbers and joining BJP. We are supporters of Martin Dango,” said Sanjay Lama, another supporter.

“We have decided to join and support the BJP in this election. Our candidate is MM Dango. We support him and have resigned from NPP. We like BJP and we want our leader to contest election from BJP. We are from Maheskola, Ranikore and surrounding areas and now we will work for BJP.

Speaking to reporters, BJP state vice-president Dipayan Chakraborty said, “Under the leadership of Pelsi Snaitang, they have joined the BJP. We welcome them and it is a good move because on the eve of the election when we were to go for nominations, the local committee was disbanded and there was mass resignation from NPP.”

He said that every local has started realizing that the government led by Conrad K Sangma has failed miserably as the expectations of the people have not been fulfilled in the last five years.

Asked about Dango joining the BJP, he said he is expecting to hear some good news from Ranikor in a day or two.

“We are hearing that he will join the party as most of his supporters have joined the BJP. So we are hopeful that in a day or two we will hear some good news from Ranikor.

Expressing confidence that the BJP will lead the government after the elections, Chakraborty also said that the NPP would not be needed if the party gets 30 seats.

“If the BJP has 25, we are going to lead the government. This too is speculation. let us see. We are going to the people, so the public is going to give its verdict. In today’s politics, I cannot answer this because the calculation starts only after the decision of the people. So we have to look for the better interest of the people. Once we go back to the people, they have to answer. If people give us 30-31 seats then we don’t need NPP.

Martin M Dango said he is yet to receive official communication from his leaders and supporters, but will go by the wishes of his people.

“I heard that my supporters had met and decided to quit NPP and join BJP. But I am yet to receive communication officially from my leaders and supporters,” said Dango.
