Insigne, who left Napoli at the end of the season after 15 years to join Toronto FC in Major League Soccer, converted a penalty and assisted Matteo Politano to give Napoli a comfortable halftime lead.

Maarten de Roon brought Atalanta back into the match in the 58th minute, but Elgif Elmas sealed the result nine minutes from time.

Napoli are below Milan in the one-on-one record. Milan hosted Bologna on Monday.

Fourth-placed Juventus could later move ahead of defending champions Inter Milan with a win in the eagerly anticipated Derby d’Italia. The Roma also play in the later, relegation-threatened Sampdoria.

Atalanta did better in the opening game in Bergamo but Napoli took the lead in the 14th minute when home goalkeeper Juan Musso diddge Dries Mertens and Insigne fired a powerful spot-kick.

It was his first goal against Atalanta, and he also provided his second, from a free-kick volleyed by Politano.

De Roon led a cross from Aleksez Miranchuk to cut the deficit in the second half and Atalanta laid siege to a Napoli goal, but were caught on the counterattack. Hirving Lozano ran on a brilliant ball from Kalidou Koulibaly and swung it to bring Elmas into the slot and secure the point.

hat-trick

Beto scored a hat-trick to help Udinese defeat Cagliari 5–1 in a relegation fight.

Udinese moved up 11 points from the relegation zone. Cagliari, whose midfielder Alberto Grassi was dismissed, finished three points above the drop.

Fiorentina defeated 10-man Empoli 1–0, with Nicolas González topping a free-kick second when Sebastiano Luperto was sent off after a second yellow card.
