Strikes from Zaccagni and Anderson earned Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio a 2–0 win over Sassuolo, despite Ciro Immobile being substituted after a quarter of an hour due to right thigh discomfort.

Lazio recovered from the early exit of injured captain Ciro Immobile to keep their Champions League hopes alive with a 2-0 win at Sassuolo on Sunday.

Mattia Zacagni opened the scoring before the break by converting a penalty awarded after Sassuolo defender Jeremy Toljan handled the ball from a corner.

Felipe Anderson added a deep second in injury time with Lazio in fifth place, three points behind third-placed Juventus and Inter Milan, who are level on points, and four behind champions AC Milan.

Maurizio Sarri’s side took advantage of a 2-2 draw at second-placed AC Milan in Lecce after Juventus crushed Napoli 5-1 on Friday to go top of the table with a healthy nine-point advantage.

When Lazio hosts AC Milan next weekend, Immobile is now in doubt after being substituted after a quarter of an hour due to right thigh discomfort.

It is a fresh blow for the 32-year-old striker, who had already missed several matches earlier this season with a left thigh problem.

The leading Serie A scorer in action with 189 goals is aiming for the top-scorer title for a fifth time with AC Milan to equal the record set by Swede Gunnar Nordahl in the 1950s.

But Immobile currently has only seven goals on the clock, five behind Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.

Sassuolo are in 16th place after this sixth defeat in seven matches.
