On the other hand, SBI, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finance and ICICI Bank were the laggards.
Binod Modi, Head (Strategy) Reliance Securities said, “Domestic benchmark indices extended gains in the form of rebound in IT and metals. Besides, recovery in FMCG stocks and RIL-backed market supported them to reach new highs.”
However, it was again not a broad-based rally as profit booking in midcap and smallcap stocks was reflected in Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices falling for the third day in a row, he said.
Elsewhere in Asia, shares in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Seoul ended in the red, while Tokyo closed with gains.
Equities in Europe were trading largely on a positive note in mid-session deals.
Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude rose 0.72 per cent to $70.89 per barrel.
