Sensex Sheds 293 pts on Last Day of 2022, Nifty Settles at 18,100; Bajaj Twins Shine

Sensex Today: Domestic markets started Friday trading on a positive note amid strong global cues.

Sensex Today: The benchmark indices ended on a negative note amid volatility in the last trading session of 2022 on December 30. smelly Around 18,100. The S&P BSE Sensex hit a high of 61,393 in Friday morning trade. Thereafter, the benchmark indices pared gains and slipped into the negative territory as the day progressed due to weakness in twin index heavyweights ICICI Bank and HDFC.

Due to heavy selling in late trade, the BSE index fell 293 points from the day’s high to hit a low of 60,744. Finally, the Sensex closed at 60,841 with a fall of 293 points.

Despite the day’s losses, the BSE benchmark managed to gain 1.7 per cent this week, and signed off the year 2022 on a winning note – up 4.4 per cent.

The NSE Nifty 50-year closed 86 points down on the last trading day, but was up 1.7 per cent this week and 4.3 per cent in 2022.

Among the 30 Sensex stocks, ICICI Bank was down over 1.5 per cent, and was solely responsible for the loss of nearly 100 points on the 30-share benchmark. Bharti Airtel, HDFC, Nestle India, Mahindra & Mahindra, ITC, Asian Paints, Larsen & Toubro and PowerGrid Corporation were the other notable losers.

On the positive front, Bajaj Finserv climbed over 2 per cent. Titan, Bajaj Finance and Tata Steel were up over one per cent each.

Broader markets outperformed the benchmark indices in trade today. The BSE Midcap index advanced 0.4 per cent, while the Smallcap index gained 0.8 per cent. The overall market breadth was also quite positive, with around 2,200 advancing shares versus 1,300-odd declined on the BSE.

In contrast to the day’s performance, the broader indices were underperformers in the year 2022. The BSE Midcap index ended with a gain of 1.4 per cent against Sensex’s gain of 4.4 per cent. The Smallcap index was down 1.8 per cent for the year.

Sector-wise, the BSE Consumer Durable index rose 0.8 per cent in Friday’s trade. Metals and realty indices were other notable gainers. On the other hand, FMCG, Power and Bankex declined.

Globally, technology and growth stocks lifted US markets overnight. The NASDAQ Composite closed above 2 percent, up more than 250 points, while the S&P 500 and Dow Jones each climbed 1 percent.

Asia-Pacific markets were also upbeat this morning, with the S&P 200, Nikkei 225, Topix, Hang Seng and Shanghai Composite indices upbeat.

In the commodities market, mixed trend was seen as Brent crude prices declined over 1 per cent to $82 per barrel on fears of uncertain demand. WTI crude, however, rose 0.5 per cent to $78 per barrel.
