Former Forest and Parliamentary Affairs Minister and six-time MLA from Bhanjanagar constituency Bikram Keshari Arukha was on Monday elected Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly.

Arukha was elected unopposed as no other member had filed her nomination. The opposition BJP and Congress did not field any candidate. He is the 21st Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly.

The election for the post of Speaker was held after a special session of the Legislative Assembly was called. The proceedings of the house were adjourned after the election.

The post of the Speaker fell vacant after the resignation of Surya Narayan Patro on June 4 due to health reasons.

The special session was presided over by Vice President Rajinikanth Singh. After the election, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Congress Legislature Party leader Narsingh Mishra, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Pramila Malik and several other senior members made Arukha the president.
