Self-doubt rising after another loss: CSK head coach Stephen Fleming

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming has admitted that self-doubt is rising in the team, and players are getting a bit edgy after the defending champions lost their fourth consecutive IPL 2022 match under new captain Ravindra Jadeja. Huh.

In yet another down performance by the four-time IPL champions, CSK managed to score just 154 runs on the board, mainly thanks to 48 runs from 35 balls by Moeen Ali. But Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) took their first win of the season with Abhishek Sharma (75) and Kane Williamson (32) scoring in the run-chase.

Fleming said that every aspect of CSK’s game in IPL 2022 was a matter of concern.

“Every aspect is a concern. We played well. We are kind of learning. We have some issues with the availability of players and some areas (a) are a bit short and we are just looking for players. So, we’ve got to learn something to do around our players and our squad, and we don’t have any evidence that helps support that kind of belief,” the New Zealander said.

“So, we are not winning the game. You get a little self-doubt, and the players get a little dull. So, we have to work through it very quickly and try and find some rhythm and try and get back into the tournament,” Fleming said.

Fleming said that Deepak Chahar’s absence is a loss and hoped that a good performance or two could help bring back the confidence in the group.

“Deepak is a loss, but if I can summarize it properly, batting, bowling and a little bit of fielding, it is quite a lot. So it’s just pressure. We are just not coming in a position to put pressure on the opposition and we are only coming in second place. So, these can be small margins and have a good performance or two, and give you a little bit of confidence and a little bit of evidence that you’re okay with the way it goes.

“Okay, I think that’s clear. We need to work on batting, bowling and fielding and going forward we improve on batting, bowling and fielding.”

Captain Jadeja said that the team fell short by 20-25 runs, although 155 on the wicket was not bad.

“It is with the ball that we are disappointed but we were 20-25 runs short. We wanted to fight till the end. 155 is not bad and our bowlers were looking to take wickets. Tomorrow may be a holiday but we will try to improve. We’ll talk about where we’re lacking. We are professionals and we need to work hard, stick together and come back strong.”
