Security beefed up in UP’s Muzaffarnagar ahead of farmers’ mahapanchayat on Sunday

Lucknow: Elaborate security arrangements have been made in and around Muzaffarnagar in view of the mahapanchayat of the United Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Sunday.

“Farmers from neighboring states of Haryana, Punjab and Uttarakhand are also likely to attend the meeting,” ANI reported.

A Mahapanchayat is being called in protest against the three controversial agricultural laws.

Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait has said that a large number of people will participate in this program.

“Take Kisan Mahapanchayat organized by @Kisanektamorcha in Muzaffarnagar on 5th September will prove to be a milestone in protecting the interests of rural farmers and farm labourers. This panchayat will connect the youth with the soil of the field. Make your presence felt at the historic land of Muzaffarnagar. #FarmersProtest,” he tweeted earlier this week.

The mahapanchayat assumes significance as farmers mostly from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have been demanding since November last year that the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance. And withdraw the Agricultural Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 and make a new law to guarantee minimum support prices for crops.
