Section 144 In North-East Delhi To Avert Riots, Violence Ahead Of G20 Events

New Delhi: Ahead of the G20 events in the national capital, the Delhi Police has imposed Section 144 in Northeast Delhi, which prohibits large gatherings or any unlawful activity. The notice said, “The order to impose restrictions under section 144 of CrPC has been issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in North-East Delhi, where communal riots broke out in 2020.” The order is dated April 10 and has been issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Northeast Delhi. The order has been issued to deal with any situation leading to violence or breach of peace during the G20 events in the national capital. Senior police officials said the order is valid for two months and will be reissued if required after a detailed assessment.

According to the order, “There is a possibility of breach of peace due to sudden massive gathering/dharna/protest which will march towards North-East District and peace during various programs/meetings to be held in connection with G-20 Summit-2023 otherwise there is a danger of riots or ruckus.

It further added that police teams would keep a close watch on any speech made in all public places, slogans, display of posters, placards or banners likely to create criminal enmity between communities or hurt their religious sentiments .

A senior police officer told ANI, “The order has been issued to ensure precautionary measures and any person violating this order will be punishable under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code-1860.” He further said that since during the 2020 riots it was found that the rioters kept bottles, petrol, bricks, stones, sticks and rods to be used during the violence, the order prohibits the use or possession of any such items and There is also a ban on unrestricted movement. Such items will be closely monitored.

India is currently holding meetings across the country under its G20 presidency in the lead-up to the G20 summit in New Delhi in September.
