The Delhi team, which last won the prestigious Ranji Trophy in 2007-08, has given Indian cricket some superstars like Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag and Rishabh Pant.

New Delhi, Feb 20 (PTI) The Delhi senior team’s domestic season ended last month but the support staff members are still waiting for their coaching contracts from Delhi district and Cricket Association (DDCA).

The same is true of the support staff of the Under-19 and Under-25 teams. The Under-19 season for Delhi ended in December while the Under-25 team played its last match a week ago.

Expectedly, none of the support staff across age groups wanted to speak on record on the matter when PTI contacted them.

Abhay Sharma coached Delhi’s senior team from October-January without any contract and did the same for U-25 coach Pankaj Singh, U-19 coach Jaswant Rai and other members of the support staff.

A DDCA source said that the contracts of the support staff will be handed over soon and they will be paid in full.

“The contracts will be handed over soon and all coaches across age groups will be paid in full. All his daily allowances were duly paid during the season,” the source said.

Members of the age group’s support staff confirmed to PTI that the daily allowances were disbursed on time, though at times they had to spend from their own pockets.

“The entire system works in good faith and we know that we will get our dues eventually. But it would be better if the contracts are issued before the start of the season and not after it is over.

“There was no problem with our daily allowance, but at times, you have to spend from your pocket when you travel across the country,” said a support staff member on condition of anonymity.

As it aims to reclaim its lost glory, Delhi Cricket has again been embroiled in controversy this season. The DDCA sacked the senior selection committee in the middle of their Ranji Trophy campaign as the team was plagued with injury issues throughout the first-class event and the fast bowlers often broke down.

It was not surprising that Delhi failed to make it to the knockout stages, although young players, who got a chance to play due to frequent breakdowns of senior players, led Delhi to their first Ranji Trophy win over mighty Mumbai in more than four decades. The team ended their Ranji campaign with a win over Hyderabad.

The coaches had cited the team’s fitness issues and lack of preparation time as the main reason for the inconsistent run.
