‘Scream’ beats ‘Spider-Man No Way Home’ by $30.6 million at US box office

Directed by Paramount Pictures, Scream has surpassed Spider-Man No Way Home at the box office. The film debuted over the weekend with ticket sales of $30.6 million, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

‘Scream’ is a version of the 1996 version of the film that goes by the same name. It was released on January 14 and fits into the horror genre. It is the fifth film in the franchise as well as a reboot that introduces a fresh and young cast. The film has benefited from a Martin Luther King Jr holiday weekend release. Paramount Pictures estimated the total collection, including Monday’s earnings, to be $35 million.

The film is considered the first box office success in the US in over a year. With this Hollywood is hoping to return to the weekly fixture in theaters. The recent surge in COVID-19 across the world has affected the film industry and delayed various release plans.

Marvel’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” slipped to second place with $20.8 million in its fifth week of release. Producer Sony Pictures has predicted that the film will earn an additional $5.2 million on Martin Luther King Jr.’s Day. This would help the film reach a total domestic gross of $703.9 million.

It will overtake ‘Black Panther’ to reach fourth place. The first three places are held by ‘Avatar’ ($760 million). “Avengers: Endgame” ($858 million) and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($936 million). The new film in the Spider-Man franchise has grossed $1.6 billion globally.
